At the Glenties Municipal District Committee meeting this week, the Roads Area Manager, Brendan McFadden, briefed the committee members on preparatory work that was underway for improvements to non-county island roads for 2022. Tenders have been issued and are expected back in the coming weeks.

The condition of non-county Roads on Donegal’s Offshore Islands has been the focus of attention for a number of years now.

With support and collaboration between the Island Representatives, Elected Members and Officials from the Department of Rural and Community Development, Donegal County Council developed and adopted a Policy for Island Roads during 2021. The thrust of this Policy was to allow non-county island roads, that were being used by the public, to be taken in charge by the Council after the Department agreed to fully fund resurfacing works prior to the roads being taken over.

Department officials and Council staff engaged early in 2022 to identify roads that were eligible under new Policy culminating in an announcement on 9th March of €2.09 million in funding. This will allow for repair of 14 non-county roads which will bring huge benefits to both locals and tourists visiting our Islands.

Cllr John Shéamais Ó Fearraigh who is a member of the Roads and Transportation Strategic Policy Committee (SPC) and who chaired the SPC sub-group that developed the Council’s Island Roads Policy welcomed the progress. He noted that ‘the new funding was a great result for our offshore islands and is a good example of the different arms of the Council working together. The issue was first raised at Coiste na nOileán meetings, supported by the Glenties Municipal District Committee and was referred to the Roads SPC through the Council’s Corporate Policy Group. The SPC developed a policy that was subsequently adopted by the full Council which has now delivered €2.09m in funding for our lslands and hopefully this will continue in future years.’

Réamh-obair ar siúl d'oibreacha feabhsúcháin ar bhóithre oileánda i ndiadh fógra maointhe ón roinn forbartha tuaithe agus pobal

Ag Cruinniú Cheantar Bardais na nGleanntach an tseachtain seo, thug an Bainisteoir Ceantair Bóithre, Breandán Mac Pháidín, eolas do bhaill an choiste maidir le réamh-obair atá ar siúl chun feabhsúcháin a dhéanamh ar bhóithre oileánda neamhchontae don bhliain 2022. Tá tairiscintí eisithe agus táthar ag súil le freagraí ar ais sna seachtainí amach romhainn.

Le roinnt blianta anuas, tá aird á díriú ar an bhail atá ar Bhóithre Neamhchontae ar na hOileáin Amach ó Chósta i nDún na nGall.

Le tacaíocht agus le comhoibriú idir Ionadaithe de chuid na nOileán, Comhairleoirí Tofa agus Oifigigh ón Roinn Forbartha Tuaithe agus Pobail, d’ullmhaigh Comhairle Contae Dhún na nGall polasaí, agus ghlac leis, le haghaidh Bóithre Oileánda, in 2021. Is é cuspóir an Pholasaí seo ná ligint don Chomhairle seilbh a ghlacadh ar bhóithre oileánda neamhchontae, a bhí in úsáid ag an phobal, i ndiaidh don Roinn aontú chun oibreacha dromhchla a mhaoiniú ina n-iomláine sula nglacfaí seilbh ar na bóithre.

Bhí oifigigh de chuid na Roinne agus na Comhairle i dteagmháil lena chéile go luath in 2022 chun bóithre a aithint a bheadh incháilithe faoin Pholasaí úr seo, agus mar thoradh air sin fógraíodh maoiniú de €2.09 milliún ar an 9 Márta. Ligfidh seo dúinn 14 bhóthar neamhchontae a chóiriú, rud a rachaidh go mór chun sochair an phobail áitiúil agus turasóirí a bheas ag teacht ar cuairt chuig na hoileáin.

D'fháiltigh an Clr. John Shéamais Ó Fearraigh, atá ina bhall den Choiste Beartas Straitéiseach do Bhóithre agus Iompar (CBS) agus a rinne cathaoirleacht ar fhoghrúpa an CBS a d’ullmhaigh Polasaí Bóithre Oileánda na Comhairle, d’fháiltigh sé roimh an dul chun cinn. Luaigh sé gur ‘toradh iontach é an maoiniú úr seo do na hOileáin Amach ó Chósta agus gur sampla maith é de chodanna éagsúla den Chomhairle ag comhoibriú go maith lena chéile. Pléadh an cheist den chéaduair ag cruinnithe de chuid Choiste na nOileán, le tacaíocht ó Choiste Cheantar Bardais na nGleanntach, agus cuireadh ar aghaidh é chuig an CBS Bóithre trí Ghrúpa Polasaí Corparáide na Comhairle. D’ullmhaigh an CBS an polasaí, ar ghlac an Chomhairle iomlán leis níos moille, agus tá maoiniú de €2.09 milliún faighte anois dár gcuid oileán agus tá muid ag súil go leanfar leis seo sna blianta amach romhainn.’
